What I think of Fenty Beauty

Spoiler alert: it’s pretty fucking great.

I held back and only, only got four products: three of the Match Stix (I don’t know what the plural is?) and the Gloss Bomb. (It’s part of my new thing to be a minimalist – ha.)

So let’s start with the Gloss Bomb.

I’m not usually a gloss kind of girl – I hate how your hair sticks to your lips when it gets windy; I always thought it looked quite cheap/immature; and that it never really suited me.

Well let me eat my words.

This is gorgeous. It’s thick and lush and has the most flattering tint. It can be worn by itself or on top of lipsticks (or liquid lipsticks like I like to – the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita II to be precise).

It also smells delicious. Again, a lot of lipstick scents tend to either fall into the “too powdery” basket or the “overtly sweet” one. This packs a peachy punch.

Just look at the way these stix snap together! Magnets – science is incredible, huh?

Obviously I had to get three because could you imagine two stix getting this effect? Nope.

So I got the Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Sand, the Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Trippin and Yacht Life.

I love using the concealer skinstick as a foundation actually. I don’t like to wear too much day-to-day so just a few swipes of this and a bit of blending in and I’m good to go. I think it gives a decent amount of coverage and is quite matte on my oily skin. It does need to be buffed in a bit though – a denser brush works better IMO. I believe there are actually 20 shades of the Match Stix Matte Skinstick (absolutely insane! Though her foundation range actually has more shades if that even is possible). So you can use this, like I do as a foundation, as it’s intended as a concealer, or, you can actually use a shade lighter as a highlighter and a darker shade as a contour. Multi-purpose!

There were so many Shimmer Skinsticks to pick from and I finally settled with these two because I think that I’d use these two colours the most and that I don’t have anything like this in my current collection. They can both be worn as highlighters, blushes and/or eyeshadows (it’s slightly a bit thick to apply straight from the stick as eyeshadow but fingers work fine).

Can’t wait to try more of the range! RIP my money.

Some of my favourite fragrances at the moment

Okay so there’s a lot of fragrances here (well more than I’d like to own), so I’mma just talk about my current favourites. The others I’m desperately trying to finish so I have space to buy new ones, ones that I actually deeply adore.

Byredo Gypsy Water

Enough said.

Maison Margiela By the Fireplace

I bought this on my last Europe trip (the beauty purchases which I blogged here). Obviously it was winter when we were over there so this was just the perfect scent. Whenever I sniff it, it takes my right back there – god bless our olfactory system. I also love that it has no lid – that obviously made it a lot easier when packing during our travels.

It literally smells like what it says on the bottle: a warm fireplace. It’s a little bit sweet, a little bit spicy, and definitely very warm. It has notes of chestnuts and is labelled as a unisex fragrance. To get more “technical”, these are the exact notes:

Top notes : Pink pepper, orange flower petals, clove oil
Middle notes : Chestnut accord, Gaïac wood oil, cade oil
Base notes: Vanilla accord, Peru balsam, cashmeran

Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia

My one and only Jo Malone fragrance and definitely the sweetest scent in my collection. I first bought this on my first ever trip to Europe (back in 2013) so every time I smell this it takes me back to my first time overseas, fitting in a zillion countries into the span of a couple of weeks.

I initially bought the 30mL at Harrod’s (I remember everything about the experience) during my first shopping trip on Oxford Street. It was quite a spontaneous purchase – I knew I wanted to buy one to define the trip, but had done no research prior except that it had to be Jo Malone because it was so synonymous with London.

It’s fresh, it’s sweet and it’s floral. Most of my other scents tend to lean more towards the woody/spicy family, but this one holds a very special place in my heart and I’ll probably continue to purchase it for years to come. Absolutely lush.

My current everyday face

I can honestly say I love every single product in this post and will probably continue to use them for months, even years, to come.

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 50+

Honestly my favourite face sunscreen ever. The moment I first used this (in its teeny tiny form – I believe I got it in a Loop Box), I knew I had to buy the full size – even if it is $40. (A note – you can actually get the small version, the 30mL, for $18.)

On Mecca’s website, this is how it’s described: The beauty super sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays in a hydrating matte finish cream. Containing SPF 50 with hyaluronic acid, pomegranate extract and vitamin E in a non-oily and non-whitening formula, this weightless SPF formula acts as the perfect makeup base while preventing premature ageing caused by the damaging effects of the sun.

Honestly I can’t exactly say that it provides a hydrating matte finish (no idea what that even means?) but it does leave my skin feeling absolutely lovely. It blends in like a moisturiser, super absorbing and leaves no white streaks whatsoever, and is pretty great as a primer. I love that it’s also SPF 50 – the sun rays in Australia are way harsh.

I wear this every day – no matter sun or shine – either by itself or under makeup.

It Cosmetics CC+ Cream in Medium

This version, not the illuminating version. I’ve tried all different ways of applying it – beauty blender, brush and fingers – and I think fingers is best. It just warms the product up and makes application much easier. It gives you a nice, sheer coverage that’s perfect for day-to-day activities. The tube also lasts forever! This is my second tube.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Sensual

It’s the perfect nude-peachy blush shade. It goes with almost every makeup look and you can build it up and it won’t cake. Just a few swipes and you’re good to go!

Nars Creamy Concealer in Custard

I like to wear this on days when I’m not wearing makeup. Just some sunscreen, a few dabs of this around my eyes and my nose (and my breakouts if I have any …) and I’m good to go. It blends in really well though I do have to set it with powder to make sure it doesn’t budge throughout the day.

It Cosmetics Brow Power (in not sure what colour but I think Universal Dark Brown?)

I love how tiny the nib is. It’s really easy to fill in my brows – where it’s sparse – and the spoolie is dense and firm so makes combing my brows through a dream.

Clinique Lash Power Mascara

This is my first ever tubular mascara and I bought it on the recommendation with the goddess that is Zoe Foster-Blake. It’s meant to be waterproof, sweatproof and idiot-proof (I think so anyway) and can be removed with hot water (which I like to just do in the shower). It’s a great no-fuss mascara. I usually find a lot of my mascaras drop which is super annoying because who has time to recognise and correct this mistake on a normal working day?

Glossier balmdotcom

A thick, moisturing salve. And look, it says it’s universal, but I’m the sort of person that would just use Lucas Papaw ointment as a lip balm. It’s unscented and just does what it says. Also helps that the packaging is so darn cute.

Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lipstick in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I believe I received this in a Sephora online order. It’s a lovely dark rose shade that’s perfect for everyday – my skin tone is a little bit darker so I find a traditional rose shade can wash me out. It’s creamy and easy to apply given its diminutive size.

My European beauty haul

I swear I lucked out with my colour scheme.

I say European, but I really mean London. You know, Boots, Harrods, M&S, Superdrug. Absolute heaven. I could’ve bought more, obviously, but my luggage was packed to the rafters with knits and boots and down jackets (tip: Europe in January is a crazy idea!).

And, of course, I went a little nuts at City Pharma in Paris, much to my partner’s dismay. Bioderma, Nuxe, Biafine, Homeoplasmine … oh boy was it chaotic. Go in there with a plan. Know what you want, get it, and get out.

Anywho, they aren’t pictured here (mainly because I was too lazy to go and grab them – oops!). But what is pictured:

  • Tanya Burr Cosmetics Birthday Suit Eye Palette
  • Nuxe Lip Balm
  • Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick in Stoned Rose
  • Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift in Naomi
  • Collection Lasting Collection Concealer
  • Maison Margiela Replica fragrance in By the Fireplace
  • Rosie for Autograph Cream Eyeshadow Stick in Almond Eyes
  • Sleek Highlighting Palette in Precious Metals

What’s currently on my #shelfie

This is what I’m currently testing, using and loving.

Before I took these carefully choreographed photos, because, let’s face it – this is not how my shelf looks every day, I did a cull on products that have expired or I don’t use anymore and managed to clean out a good amount. Now it’s much clearer what products I actually use on a day to day basis: one tinted moisturiser, one CC cream, one foundation, Real Technique brushes, cream eyeshadows and, what I think, a pretty small skincare collection.

For skincare, I’m trying to tailor it more to my skin type and skin needs (read: scarring, dry patches, oily t-zone and big pores), rather than testing every single product. It seems to be working. As you can see though, I do have a large array of face masks – and this isn’t everything I own! Whoops!

For makeup, there’s an obvious minimalistic approach. I’m all for simplicity and warm tones.

IMG_9952What has been a complete life changer but not pictured because I totally forgot about it (darn colour scheme) is my BEAUTY BLENDER. Holy moley. Best. Way. To. Apply. MakeUp. EVER. Just wet the sponge, dab in your product and you look bloody perfecto.

A fragrance I’m loving right now: Gypsy Water

I wanted to treat myself and it was either this, Byredo Gypsy Water or Diptyque’s Eau Duelle.

I ended up getting this because it was a little bit stronger and a little bit more original. The other was beautiful, sure, with a fragrant vanilla, but somewhat more common than Gypsy Water.

Plus, just look at that packaging. I’ve had my eye on it for ages.

I’d describe Gypsy Water as a fresh spice that gets softer as the day progresses. Here are the actual notes from the technical people at Byredo:

Top: Bergamot, Lemon, Pepper, Juniper Berries
Mid: Incense, Pine Needles, Orris
Base: Amber, Vanilla, Sandalwood.

Oh and now I’ve added Frédéric Malle’s Portrait of a Lady to the to-buy list. SO good!

Colourpop ‘haul’

Okay so it’s not a massive haul, but to be fair I also bought two eyeshadows. They’re just not pictured here.

What a dangerous trap I’ve fallen in to – damn you YouTube swatch videos!

There is just such a selection of colours and textures and finishes, I’m in love. For my first order (because yes, obviously there will be another one – just when I can justify the ridiculous shipping cost), I went with:

Lippie Stix in FrenchieTopanga and Frida

Ultra Satin Lips in Echo Park and Frick N’ Frack and

Shadows in La La and So Quiche.
